Writing and Balancing Chemical Formulas

Essential Standard: Compare the properties of ionic, covalent, metallic, and network compounds. Explain the characteristics of the elements based on their position on the Periodic Table.

Clarifying Objectives: Interpret the name and formula of compounds using IUPAC convention.

The Learner Will: Identify charges assigned to each group of elements.
Identify when Roman Numerals are used in naming compounds.
Differentiate between monoatomic and polyatomic ions.
Apply rules for writing and naming binary and polyatomic ions.
Interpret prefixes in naming molecular compounds.
Apply rules for naming acids and bases.

Students will review the process of writing and naming correctly balanced chemical formulas. They will use the information provided to them in the notes and in the textbook and work in groups on a worksheet to help practice. Once the class has reviewed the given information they will partake in a review quiz issued through Socrative.com. This from of assessment will calculate the comprehension of the students and provide them with instant feedback to the questions they got wrong.

The review quiz will be about a five question quiz that covers every single type of chemical compound. This is so the students can be measured on what type of chemical compound do they understand more or less. Once the quiz is completed I will review the the results to see what is the most struggled area in order to focus more on that.
